Students at Lipson Co-operative Academy are helping to keep their environment clean while supporting its wider sustainability work.

Led by the school’s Eco Committee, the initiative saw pupils collecting litter across the playground on Bernice Terrace and the school’s football field, before finishing with hot chocolate and biscuits in the canteen.

The activity forms part of the school’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Lipson has just completed the installation of solar panels at the school as part of a national scheme supported by Great British Energy and the government, which has invested £100 million in projects across the country.

Part of the Ted Wragg Trust, the school has also recently launched its Climate Action Plan, Small Steps – Big Impact, setting out a commitment to environmental stewardship and outlining how students, staff and the wider community can contribute to a more sustainable future.

As part of this work, the school has partnered with national campaign group Let’s Go Zero to support its sustainability goals and reduce its environmental impact.

Students at Exmouth Community College (ECC) experienced an inspiring and creative day of literary engagement when BAFTA award-winning screenwriter and Stonewall Book Award-winning author Dean Atta visited the school this term. The visit brought together Year 10 students alongside Year 12 and Year 13 English Literature and English Language students, offering them the opportunity to engage directly with one of the UK’s most celebrated contemporary writers.

The day began with a Sixth Form assembly, where Dean Atta spoke about his published works, including his acclaimed young adult novel in verse The Black Flamingo, as well as his upcoming publications. He also shared insights into his career as a writer for both literature and screen, encouraging students to consider the power of storytelling in shaping identity, voice, and understanding.

The visit continued in the library with an interactive creative writing workshop. Students explored language connections, free writing techniques, and verse structure, before producing their own original poems. Using literary techniques such as rhythm, rhetorical questions, and repetition, students developed creative responses that reflected confidence, imagination, and engagement.

Dean Atta spoke openly with students about writing as a means of exploring identity, including themes such as race, sexuality, and personal expression, as well as offering practical guidance on how to develop and share work within the publishing industry. The session created a lively and supportive atmosphere, with students demonstrating enthusiasm, creativity, and enjoyment throughout.

This visit strongly reflects the English curriculum at Exmouth Community College, part of the Ted Wragg Trust, which is designed to reflect the importance of English at both an educational and societal level. The curriculum aims to deliver a knowledge-rich, inclusive learning experience built around the key concepts of power and identity. With ambitious reading, writing, and oracy outcomes at its heart, the subject empowers students to become confident communicators, critical thinkers, and creative individuals.

Dean Atta is known for his powerful storytelling, which draws on his Greek Cypriot and Jamaican heritage and his queer identity. He is a patron of LGBT+ History Month and Chair of the Poetry and Spoken Word Group of the Society of Authors. His work spans young adult fiction, poetry, picture books, and screenwriting, with his debut adult novel Big Man due to be published in September 2026.

The event was supported by Exmouth Scholars and the Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival, and was widely praised for its impact in inspiring students and celebrating the transformative power of English.

A pupil from Cranbrook Education Campus has been crowned Under 8 chess champion after an outstanding performance at the Devon Junior Chess Association Open Spring Tournament.

Joshua won all six of his games to secure the top spot in his age group. The tournament brought together young chess players from across the region, showcasing a high level of skill and concentration.

His achievement reflects both his dedication to the game and the growing enthusiasm for chess within the school community. Staff and peers at Cranbrook Education Campus have praised his impressive performance and commitment.

Sidmouth College’s cheerleading team has been crowned regional champions at the South West Cheerleading Championships, held at the Riviera International Centre in Torquay.

Competing in the South West Schools Division, the Sidmouth team placed first after their routine was judged against entries from across the region.

The team take part in after-school cheerleading sessions as part of the college’s wider enrichment and extracurricular PE programme.

The South West Cheerleading Championships, originally launched in 2013 as the Exeter Cheer Festival, was rebranded in 2021 and now takes place at the Riviera International Centre. The event brings together teams from across the South West to compete and showcase cheerleading.

Students from West Exe School visited the Met Office to take part in a Climate Action Planning session. 

They worked alongside students from other schools to discuss climate issues and ideas for improving climate education.

During the session, students explored different sources of climate information and ranked them by trustworthiness, helping to develop their critical thinking skills. They also learned about the Met Office’s work in climate research, forecasting and communication, as well as potential career pathways in the sector.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for students to engage with real-world climate science and collaborate with peers from across the region.

The themes explored during the visit were developed further during West Exe School’s recent science festival, supported by the Royal Society of Chemistry, where students took part in workshops and talks focused on climate change, sustainability, green careers and scientific innovation.

Exmouth Community College (ECC) welcomed the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) into school this term to deliver a series of ‘Water Smart’ assemblies for students, helping them develop essential knowledge to stay safe around water.

The sessions form part of the college’s ongoing commitment to student safety and wellbeing, particularly given its close proximity to the coast and the increased independence young people develop as they get older.

Research shows that as young people grow in confidence and independence, their risk around water can increase. With Exmouth’s strong coastal location, the college places a high priority on ensuring students understand how to enjoy their environment safely and responsibly.

During the interactive presentations, students learned key water safety skills including how to “float to survive”, the meaning of different beach safety flags, and how to respond if caught in a rip current, a particularly important risk along the local coastline.

The sessions were designed to be practical, memorable and empowering, giving pupils the knowledge and confidence to make safer decisions when near water, whether at the beach or in other open water environments.

Exmouth Community College, which is part of the Ted Wragg Trust, extended its thanks to the RNLI team for their time, expertise and continued commitment to water safety education.

Students at St Luke’s Church of England School in Exeter are celebrating success after coming top in the sight reading competition at the Devon Performing Arts Festival.

The annual event celebrates amateur performance, bringing together young people from across the region at South Street Baptist Church in Exeter. Students were given passages from a set text and asked to read them aloud to demonstrate their oracy, fluency and performance skills.

The team’s achievement reflects their communication skills and hard work in preparing for the competition.

Their success underlines the school’s wider commitment to oracy, reading and communication across the curriculum, with students encouraged to develop confidence in reading aloud, performance and self-expression both inside and outside the classroom.

Part of the Ted Wragg Trust, St Luke’s places a strong emphasis on helping students develop confidence and creativity through a broad range of enrichment opportunities, including regular performing arts events and the school’s annual musical production, most recently Matilda the Musical.

Students and staff at Sidmouth College are celebrating after the school was found to have met the ‘expected standard’ across all areas following a visit from Ofsted, with inspectors highlighting positive relationships, an ambitious curriculum and strong foundations for learning.

Ofsted inspectors visited the Primley Road school in March, which is part of the Ted Wragg Trust, to assess achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing, along with post-16 provision.

Ofsted now uses a new reporting system with a five-point scale rather than the previous single-word grades. ‘Expected standard’ is the new benchmark used to indicate a high performing school that is doing everything it should be.

In their report, inspectors noted strong learning across the ambitious curriculum, stating that students “progress well through the curriculum”. At GCSE level, students were found to be building strong foundations in English and maths, with outcomes in these subjects “significantly above the national average”.

The wider school experience was also praised, with inspectors stating that students “have positive, respectful relationships with staff, who provide appropriate support and care”. They also highlighted the range of opportunities available, noting how extracurricular activities develop students’ talents and interests, such as sport, music or drama. These strengthen social and teamwork skills and “foster a feeling of belonging to the school”.

Leadership and governance were recognised as effective, with inspectors noting that leaders understand the school’s priorities and take appropriate action to drive improvement.

Post-16 provision was also noted as having improved, with students now achieving well and being better prepared for their next steps in education, employment or training.

Other comments in the report included:

• Pupils feel safe and have trusted members of staff with whom they can share concerns
• Pupils generally have positive attitudes to learning and to the wider opportunities on offer 
• Leaders ensure that teachers receive effective professional learning opportunities
• Pupils learn how to be positive members of the community through demonstrating kindness

Students from across the Ted Wragg Trust have taken on one of the UK’s most demanding youth outdoor challenges, with teams successfully completing this year’s Ten Tors event on Dartmoor.

Pupils from seven trust schools – Exmouth Community College, St Luke’s Church of England School, St James School, West Exe School, Isca Academy, Queen Elizabeth’s School and Sidmouth College – took part in the expedition, forming 17 teams in total and involving more than 130 students.

The Ten Tors Challenge sees teams of six young people self-navigate across Dartmoor over two days, covering routes of 35, 45 or 55 miles. This year, 440 teams took part in the wider event, setting out from Okehampton Camp before crossing the finish line after a demanding weekend on the moor.

All participating students from across the trust completed extensive training in preparation for the expedition, with additional reserve students also taking part in training programmes.

The challenge tested endurance, teamwork, resilience and navigation skills in a remote and demanding environment, with students demonstrating determination and strong collaboration throughout.

Among the many stories from this year’s event, staff at West Exe School also marked a significant milestone for Outdoor Education staff member Chris Davies, who celebrated 36 years of involvement with Ten Tors at the school. Chris was presented with a 30 years’ service award at the Team Managers’ meeting in recognition of her longstanding contribution to outdoor education and the many students she has supported over the years.

Year 5 pupils at Exwick Heights Primary School in Exeter enjoyed an immersive journey through space after welcoming the Space Odyssey mobile planetarium to the school.

Inside the giant inflatable dome, pupils explored the planets in the solar system and learned fascinating facts about how they differ in size, temperature and distance from the Sun.

One of the highlights of the session saw pupils learning about the phases of the Moon and discovering how its changing appearance is caused by its position in relation to the Earth and Sun.

The interactive experience also introduced children to a range of exciting astronomy facts, helping to spark curiosity and encouraging pupils to ask questions about the world around them.

Space Odyssey’s presentations are led by experienced science educator and Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society Simon Ould, using immersive projections and simulations to bring science learning to life.

Exwick Heights Primary School, which is part of the Ted Wragg Trust, places a strong emphasis on developing children’s curiosity and understanding of the world through hands-on science learning. The school’s science curriculum encourages pupils to ask questions, investigate ideas and develop scientific enquiry skills from an early age.

The Liberal Democrat MP for Honiton and Sidmouth spent an hour with Student Council members, who attended school during half term, discussing a range of issues affecting young people and their wider community.

Students asked questions covering topics including business rates, transport challenges, potholes, and concerns about reduced opportunities for face-to-face activities for young people outside of technology. They described the session as a valuable opportunity to share their views directly with their local MP and engage in discussion about issues that matter to them.

Mr Foord listened carefully throughout and responded to each topic in detail, offering insight into his role and responsibilities as an MP.

Students and staff at St James School in Exeter have recently held their ‘Culture Day’, an engaging event that celebrated the rich diversity within the school community.

Students showcased their heritage by wearing traditional clothing representing a wide range of cultures. Countries including Ukraine, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Portugal, China and India were represented, creating a meaningful opportunity for students to share and learn more about each other’s backgrounds.

Food played a central role in the celebrations, with the school’s catering team preparing a special menu inspired by global cuisine. Students were able to experience dishes from different cultures, adding another dimension to the day. 

Throughout the event, students also took part in an interactive cultural quiz, made up of nine engaging rounds. The quiz tested their knowledge of languages, food, art and geography from around the world, encouraging curiosity and teamwork.

The event reflected the commitment of the school, which is part of the Ted Wragg Trust, to celebrating diversity and promoting inclusion.

Students from Queen Elizabeth’s School secured an impressive second place at the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Team Maths Challenge for the South West.

The team, made up of Reuben and Toby (year 9) and Sabine and Isaac (year 8), competed against schools from across the region, hosted at fellow Ted Wragg Trust school, Exmouth Community College.

Taking part in the competition for the first time, the QE team rose to the challenge, working together to tackle a series of demanding mathematical problems and activities. Their performance saw them finish second overall, ahead of a number of experienced teams from local schools.

The UKMT Team Maths Challenge is designed to promote problem-solving, teamwork and a love of mathematics, with participants working collaboratively through a range of rounds testing speed, accuracy and reasoning.

As part of the Ted Wragg Trust, the result reflects the school’s strong focus on developing mathematical thinking, with students encouraged to reason, problem-solve and apply their knowledge in a range of contexts.

Tor Bridge High is celebrating a remarkable basketball season after both its year 7 and year 8 teams went undefeated for a second consecutive year.

The year 7 team played eight games this season and claimed the PSSP (Plymouth Schools Sports Partnership) annual tournament. Meanwhile, the Year 8 squad also maintained their perfect record, winning all their central venue fixtures across four evenings at the Life Centre.

Across both teams, led by PE teacher Mr Dann, staff say the success has been driven by commitment to training, strong team spirit, and a shared ambition to improve.

Strong links with local clubs and the Plymouth Patriots Academy have also played a key role, giving students exposure to elite-level basketball and coaching support. Combined with role models from older year groups, this helps create a clear pathway for aspiring players to progress to higher levels of the sport.

Part of the Ted Wragg Trust, Tor Bridge High is building on its success in the sport with the launch of its Year 7 Basketball Academy in September, offering enhanced training, nutrition support, and development opportunities for future players.

Following in the footsteps of the school’s sixth form Patriots Academy students, the programme is led by Paul James, Director of Basketball at Plymouth Patriots, and links into the Patriots Pathway, giving talented year 7 players the chance to progress under elite coaching alongside the school’s top performers.

Fifty Sidmouth College students enjoyed a full day of creative exploration in London, visiting the National Portrait Gallery and Tate Modern this term.

The group of Year 10, 11 and 12 students from the school’s Art & Photography Department travelled to the capital, stopping for breakfast along the way before heading to the National Portrait Gallery. Students then took part in a photoshoot along the South Bank, capturing London’s iconic sights and experimenting with creative composition, before finishing their day at Tate Modern.

During the visits, students explored permanent collections, made observational sketches, and took part in a scavenger hunt to research selected artworks. School staff said the trip offered an invaluable opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of artistic techniques, gain inspiration for their own work, and experience London’s world-class galleries firsthand.

At Sidmouth College, which is part of the Ted Wragg Trust, Art & Photography courses are designed to inspire students, helping them build creative skills and the confidence to take risks in their work.

The department offers a wide range of enrichment opportunities to broaden students’ cultural experiences, including clubs, exhibitions, workshops, and trips like the London visit. These experiences support students in building skills and confidence to progress to further study, work and grow as creative individuals.

The Centre of Excellence Award recognises schools that demonstrate exemplary practice in inclusion. The award celebrates schools that see inclusion as a living, evolving process, embedding it in every aspect of teaching, leadership, and community engagement.

Achieving Centre of Excellence status places Marine Academy Primary within an elite network of schools across the country that share and shape inclusive practice. West Exe School recently hosted a dynamic and enriching science festival, made possible through generous support and funding from the Royal Society of Chemistry. The one-day event brought science to life for students, highlighting its vital role in shaping a more sustainable future.

Throughout the festival, students took part in a wide range of interactive workshops, hands-on activities, and inspiring careers talks. Sessions focused on key themes including green careers, climate change, and the role of scientific innovation and artificial intelligence in tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

The event also provided valuable opportunities for students to connect with representatives from colleges, universities, and industry, giving them insight into future pathways and helping them explore the many possibilities within science-related careers.

An exciting line-up of guest speakers shared their expertise and experiences with students, including Dr Karen Marshall and Cecilia Golborne, who all helped to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators.

Dr Marshall is the Head of Science and Chemistry at The Ladies College in Guernsey and Secretary of Peninsula Section for the Royal Society of Chemistry. Cecilia Golborne is a former research project manager, current Royal Society of Chemistry scholar and Chemistry teacher at West Exe School.

Dr Bernd Eggen also exhibited at the festival, he is a climate change adaptation specialist who was part of the Nobel Prize Team for Chemistry for the discovery of Carbon-60 buckminsterfullerene which established the field of drug delivery systems including HIV treatments.

The festival was a resounding success, with students fully engaged and enthusiastic throughout the day, gaining a deeper understanding of how science can shape their futures and the world around them.

West Exe School, which is part of the Ted Wragg Trust, continues to place a strong emphasis on providing enriching experiences that broaden horizons, raise aspirations, and connect learning to real-world opportunities.

Students from West Exe School have represented their community at a national anti-bullying conference in London.

Ayeisha, William and Willow, Senior Anti-Bullying Ambassadors at the school, travelled to the capital with staff to take part in the first Young Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA) meeting for the 2026 England and Wales cohort.

The conference brought together young people from across the country to share ideas, develop strategies, and strengthen efforts to tackle bullying in schools.

The day also included open discussions about the impact of social media and provided students with the chance to speak directly with representatives from the Department for Education’s Pupil Mental Wellbeing and Engagement Team. Their reflections and ideas will help inform the development of a new national Pupil Engagement Framework.

Staff have praised the trio for their dedication to supporting fellow students and promoting a culture of kindness and respect across West Exe. Their experience will now feed into the school’s ongoing work ahead of Anti-Bullying Week in November, with the ambassadors set to play a key role in leading activities and supporting their peers.

Pupils from Marine Academy Primary enjoyed an action-packed trip to Paris this term, experiencing the sights, sounds and tastes of the French capital.

Highlights of the trip included a boat trip along the Seine, a visit to the Eiffel Tower, exploring the Sacré-Cœur and making traditional crêpes. Pupils also had the opportunity to try local foods, including some more adventurous choices such as snails!

The trip combined cultural learning with fun and practical experiences, giving pupils the chance to explore a new city, face new challenges and make memories together. For many of these young learners it was their first time abroad. 

As part of the Ted Wragg Trust, the visit is part of Marine Academy Primary’s ongoing commitment to providing pupils with opportunities that broaden horizons, spark curiosity and build confidence both inside and outside the classroom.

Six year 7 students from Tor Bridge High took part in a visit to Spaceport Cornwall this term as part of the Your Future Story programme.

During the day, the group worked alongside peers from other schools to design and build structures, as well as assemble and launch rockets. They also took part in a series of talks, gaining insight into careers and opportunities in science and engineering.

Staff said students showed confidence and enthusiasm throughout, working collaboratively in teams, contributing to discussions, and asking thoughtful questions. They were also praised for their behaviour and described as “amazing ambassadors” for the school.

The visit forms part of the Your Future Story programme, which supports young people across the South West through mentoring, enrichment activities, and opportunities designed to raise aspirations and support future pathways.

Part of the Ted Wragg Trust, the experience reflects Tor Bridge High’s commitment to encouraging students to be confident, ambitious, and outward-looking, with opportunities that help them develop new skills, broaden their horizons, and aim high for the future.

The school community at St James School in Exeter is very proud of student Olivia who has generously donated 15 inches of her hair to The Little Princess Trust, supporting children and young people facing hair loss due to illness. 

To complement her donation, Olivia also held a cake sale, raising £117 from the school community. Combined with other fundraising efforts, she has raised a fantastic £232 for the charity. 

The Little Princess Trust is one of the largest funders of childhood cancer research in the UK.  The charity relies solely on the generosity of its wonderful supporters who help them give hair and hope to so many children and young people with cancer each year.

At St James School, which is part of the Ted Wragg Trust, they empower their students to use their education to be kind and community minded and to go onto lead happy and healthy lives.

The installation is part of a wider programme by Great British Energy, a publicly owned clean-power company, which is providing support to schools, NHS sites, and military facilities. More than 250 schools across England are benefiting from funding for solar panels and other energy efficiency measures.

The move supports Lipson Co-operative Academy’s focus on putting students first and directing resources where they can make the greatest difference. Part of the Ted Wragg Trust family of schools, they are committed to fostering a sustainable future and empowering students, staff, and local communities to contribute meaningfully to a healthier planet.

All Saints Academy Plymouth hosted its annual Futures and Next Steps Fair this term, welcoming over 70 exhibitors from 33 organisations.

Students had dedicated time to visit the fair, speaking with local employers, colleges, sixth forms, and apprenticeship providers. From the Royal Navy and defence specialists Babcock to EE, accountants PKF Francis Clark, and the University of Plymouth, the day gave students the chance to explore a wide range of potential futures and hear directly from industry professionals.

The event forms part of the school’s focus on helping students make informed choices about their future pathways. They also recently hosted a year 11 Mock Interview Day, welcoming 12 employers to give students a taste of real recruitment experiences. Students impressed with their confidence and eagerness, with one, Toby, saying, “The interview was great, I felt confident and the employer said I was really eager,” while a representative from Kier described it as “a fantastic initiative for students to gain valuable life skills.”

Later in the term, a large group of year 10 students took part in a separate employability event organised by the YMCA. They interviewed employers to learn about career routes, job responsibilities, and workplace essentials, while also practising interview techniques to develop their communication and employability skills.

Students reflected positively on the experience. “I really enjoyed learning about the world of work and made some great contacts,” said Clover. Briannah added: “The employers were really helpful and helped me understand my future work commitments.”

At All Saints Academy Plymouth, part of the Ted Wragg Trust, students are encouraged to explore different futures, develop relevant skills, and plan proactively for life beyond the classroom. This approach means that more All Saints students now go on to education, employment, or training than the Plymouth, Devon, and national averages, according to 2025 NEET statistics.

Exmouth Community College (ECC) recently celebrated its annual dance production, The Blend 2026, featuring over 80 talented students. The performance this month was a sell-out, highlighting the excitement and community support surrounding the show.

The event showcased a wide variety of performances, including GCSE and A-level choreography, pieces from all exam classes, dance club routines, and a special restaging of Step in Time from the college’s previous production of Mary Poppins. Each piece demonstrated the students’ creativity, skill, and dedication, with many dancers performing original choreography that they have rehearsed intensively over several weeks.

Exmouth Community College has a strong track record in dance, with student attainment far exceeding the national average. Many graduates go on to professional dance training or use their dance qualifications to support diverse career and higher education pathways, reflecting the breadth of opportunities the subject provides.

The dance curriculum at ECC, which is part of the Ted Wragg Trust, is designed to inspire creativity, expression, and cultural awareness. Students explore performance, choreography, and critical appreciation of a wide range of dance styles, from contemporary UK companies like Rambert and Boy Blue to world dance forms such as Samba, Kathak, Capoeira, and African dance. 

Taught by specialist staff in fully equipped studios and theatre spaces, lessons challenge students to develop their technique, express their ideas, and engage with choreographic tasks, while also building transferable skills in communication, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Students at Sidmouth College have raised money to support a brave eight-year-old girl battling a rare and aggressive form of liver cancer who urgently needs a liver transplant.

Members of the school’s Student Council organised a bake sale in support of Phoebe Clarke, the cousin of year 11 student Hattie. Pupils donated and bought homemade cakes and treats, raising £200 to help Phoebe’s family in their search for a transplant and specialist treatment overseas.

Phoebe, from Altrincham in Greater Manchester, was diagnosed in February last year. She has already undergone major surgery to remove more than 80% of her liver in an attempt to remove the tumours.

Sadly, the cancer returned and she is now undergoing her third round of intensive chemotherapy. Her family say a liver transplant could offer her the best chance of survival, and they are exploring possible treatment options abroad.

Students at Sidmouth, part of the Ted Wragg Trust, said they wanted to do something practical to support their classmate and her family during an incredibly difficult time. A Student Council spokesperson said: “Phoebe is an incredibly brave little girl and an inspiration to us all. We wanted to show our support for Hattie and help raise funds for Phoebe’s treatment.”

Students from Honiton Community College visited the Met Office to learn more about the wide range of careers available and the work being done to understand and respond to climate change.

During the visit, students toured the site, met a variety of staff, and heard first-hand about different career journeys. They discovered that the Met Office offers a range of pathways, including apprenticeships, degree programmes, and internships, and that roles are not limited to science backgrounds.

Students spoke with professionals working as climate scientists, forecasters, content creators, press officers, photographers, and in a variety of media roles. They were able to ask questions and explore the many ways to contribute to the organisation’s work.

The visit also included interactive workshops on climate change, focusing on how to identify reliable and verified sources of information and what students can do as a school to support action on sustainability. The experience provided plenty of ideas to take back to Honiton College and contribute towards the school’s sustainability policy.

Honiton Community College, part of the Ted Wragg Trust, aims to create an inclusive and ambitious environment where students develop the confidence, curiosity and sense of responsibility to make a positive contribution to the world around them.

Students at Isca Academy in Exeter explored a wide range of career opportunities during the school’s third annual Careers Fair, held as part of National Careers Week.

Employers, further education providers and training organisations spoke with students about different industries, career pathways and the skills needed to succeed in the workplace.

All students from years 7 to 11 attended during the day, giving them the chance to ask questions, discover new career ideas and learn more about the options available after school, including further education, apprenticeships and employment.

Organisations supporting the event included Exeter College, Gleeds, NHS Medical Imaging, the Ministry of Justice, Willmott Dixon, the Met Office, Vistry Group, Kier Group, the Royal Air Force, the British Army, Devon Youth Service, Devon County Council, the University of Plymouth, Next Steps South West, Puffins Childcare, Devon and Cornwall Police, Bicton College and Service Design Solutions.

Part of the Ted Wragg Trust, Isca Academy places a strong focus on helping students plan for life after school, with events like the careers fair giving them the chance to explore different pathways and feel informed about their future.

Students at Cranbrook Education Campus enjoyed a flavour-filled food technology workshop in collaboration with award-winning local restaurant Denley's Indian Restaurant.

Year 9 Hospitality and Catering students worked alongside professional chefs to prepare a traditional vegetable curry and rice, learning about ingredients, cooking techniques and the flavours that make Indian cuisine so distinctive.

The hands-on session filled the school kitchen with the aromas of traditional spices as students followed expert guidance to create their dishes. As well as developing practical cooking skills, the workshop gave students an insight into careers in the hospitality industry.

Students also had the chance to taste-test their own creations, celebrating the results of their teamwork and new skills.

Part of the Ted Wragg Trust, Cranbrook Education Campus offers a wide range of enrichment opportunities that connect classroom learning with real-world industries, helping students explore career pathways and develop practical skills for the future.

Students at Isca Academy in Exeter have returned home from their first-ever ski trip in Masella, Spain.

After settling into their resort in the Catalan Pyrenees, students took lessons, improved their technique, and embraced the challenges of skiing, including first-time experiences on the chairlift and tackling longer runs.

The group made impressive progress on the slopes, and ski instructors praised the students for their politeness and positive attitude.

Away from the slopes, students enjoyed a range of activities including snow games, competitions, and evening entertainment such as Zumba lessons and karaoke.

Part of the Ted Wragg Trust, Isca Academy prides itself on offering a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities, from sports and arts to outdoor education, helping students build confidence, teamwork, and life skills alongside their academic studies.

Sixth form students at Tor Bridge High in Plymouth have returned from an unforgettable educational visit to New York City. 

The trip gave students the chance to experience some of the world’s most famous landmarks while exploring the culture, history and energy of one of the world’s most iconic cities.

During the visit, students explored Times Square, Rockefeller Center and the Chrysler Building, as well as world-renowned attractions such as the Museum of Modern Art, One World Observatory and Liberty Island, where they stood in front of the Statue of Liberty. 

They reflected at the 9/11 Memorial, took in a spectacular Broadway performance of Moulin Rouge! The Musical and watched the New York Knicks in action at Madison Square Garden, an inspiring moment for students involved in the school’s Patriots Academy basketball programme. The trip concluded with a visit to Grand Central Terminal and some last-minute shopping at Macy's.

In the months leading up to the visit, the school supported students with fundraising activities, including bake sales and penalty shoot-out competitions during sports day. The trip was also supported by £3,000 of external grant funding, helping make the opportunity accessible to more students.

Exmouth Community College (ECC) recently welcomed more than 80 members of the local community to its first ever community Iftar, marking a special moment of togetherness during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Organised by the College’s Diversity Ambassadors and the Religious, Philosophy and Ethics (RPE) team, the event brought students, families, staff and community members together to share in the evening meal that breaks the daily fast during Ramadan.

Guests were welcomed with speeches and music as the sun set, before coming together to share the Iftar meal. During the evening, several guests also took part in Muslim prayer and spoke to those attending about their beliefs and the significance of Ramadan, offering an opportunity for learning, reflection and cultural exchange.

The meal itself was prepared by the College’s Diversity Ambassadors with support from assistant headteacher Mr Green. A wide variety of dishes were enjoyed, including food generously brought along by many of the guests.

The college also extends its thanks to Tesco for providing ingredients and supporting the event.

Following the positive response from students, families and guests, ECC, which is part of the Ted Wragg Trust, hopes the community Iftar will become an annual event in the school calendar.

Community police officers visited Sidmouth College to speak with performing arts students about the realities and consequences of drink driving.

The session supported year 10 students studying the hard-hitting play Too Much Punch for Judy. During the workshop, students questioned officers about their roles and experiences responding to alcohol-related road incidents.

Officers spoke about the legal consequences of drink driving, the impact on families, and the realities faced by emergency services attending collisions. Staff said the session gave students valuable insight and strengthened their understanding of the play’s themes.

The workshop reflects Sidmouth College’s approach to drama, which focuses on practical performance experience alongside developing confidence, collaboration and critical thinking. The vocational performing arts course encourages students to explore real-world contexts while building skills that support future study and careers.

Students fromExmouth Community College had the opportunity to explore their next steps at a careers fair held alongside the school’s latest Progress Evening.

The event brought together a wide range of local organisations, businesses and training providers, giving year 11 students and their parents and carers the chance to ask questions about different industries and the options open to them.

Among those attending were Everys Solicitors, Haven Holidays, Devon and Cornwall Police, the Royal Air Force, Exeter College, Bicton College, Future Smart Careers and the Department for Work and Pensions.

As part of the Ted Wragg Trust, the college places strong emphasis on careers education, ensuring students have regular opportunities to engage with employers and gain meaningful insight into the world of work. Holding careers events alongside Progress Evenings is a model ECC are introducing for all their parents' evenings from this year to increase families’ opportunities to discover different career routes and the array of next steps available.

Events like this help ensure every student is well informed and confident as they consider their post-16 options, whether that means continuing into the college’s sixth form, pursuing further education, starting an apprenticeship or entering employment.

Students atLipson Co-operative Academy have helped raise more than £500 for a charity providing vital services for homeless people in Plymouth.

A total of £501.30 was raised for the Shekinah Centre through a range of school-led activities, including a bake sale, fundraising challenges and contributions from a Christmas jumper and pyjama mufti day. The money was used to purchase essential items such as toiletries and warm clothing, which were donated directly to the charity.

Alongside financial donations, pupils, staff and families also contributed hats, scarves, gloves, coats and other winter clothing to help support people during the colder months.

The Shekinah Centre provides support for people experiencing homelessness, offering practical help such as meals, showers and laundry facilities, clean clothing, and advice around housing, health and wellbeing. A group of students delivered the donated items to the charity’s base at Stonehouse Creek and were given a tour of the facilities, giving them a first-hand insight into the charity’s work.

Part of the Ted Wragg Trust, the fundraising effort reflects the school’s strong links with the local community and its focus on kindness, responsibility and supporting others. Alongside academic achievement, the school places importance on helping pupils understand their role in society and the positive difference they can make beyond the classroom.

Year 6 pupils from Exwick Heights Primary School enjoyed an unforgettable adventure in Paris, combining cultural exploration with hands-on learning.

During the trip, pupils explored iconic landmarks including the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame, and also enjoyed a magical day at Disneyland Paris. Each day was supported by a specially designed booklet containing itineraries, conversational French phrases, wellbeing resources, and reflective activities, helping pupils navigate the city with confidence and growing independence.

Highlights included climbing over 700 steps to the Eiffel Tower’s second floor, sailing along the Seine, and enjoying a full day of rides and activities at Disneyland. Pupils even tried local delicacies such as escargot on their final evening.

The trip gave pupils first-hand experience of French language and culture, helping them build confidence, broaden their horizons, and engage with the world beyond the classroom.

Part of the Ted Wragg Trust, the visit follows the success of last year’s first overseas residential for Year 6 pupils in Paris, and reflects Exwick Heights’ commitment to cultivating curiosity, a sense of adventure, and personal growth, helping pupils develop confidence and independence both inside and outside the classroom.

Pupils at Cranbrook Education Campus marked World Book Day with a colourful celebration of reading, dressing up as their favourite characters and showing off their book-inspired outfits.

The day encouraged students to share their love of stories, explore new books, and celebrate the joy of reading with friends and classmates.

Staff were also involved in the fun, joining in with creative costumes and helping bring the magic of books to life across the campus.

All pupils received their £1 World Book Day token to redeem for special books, giving them an extra opportunity to discover new stories and authors beyond the classroom.

Students from All Saints Academy Plymouth have been gaining hands-on experience of the food industry through a new community project with the Plymouth Fishing and Seafood Association (PFSA).

Year 9 students joined PFSA chef Matt Corner and CEO Edward Baker in one of the school’s technology kitchens to batch produce a fish soup.

The project gave students a practical, real-world application of the skills they have developed in their food and nutrition lessons. Students learned from industry professionals as they worked together to prepare vegetables and fish.

The finished soup proved a success, with students proud of both the process and the final product. The experience gave them valuable insight into food production and careers within the catering and seafood industries.

At All Saints Academy Plymouth, part of the Ted Wragg Trust, learning combines academic study with practical and professional experiences. Opportunities like this help students prepare for apprenticeships, jobs in local industries and further education, supported by a wide-ranging careers programme.

Pupils from Exwick Heights Primary School were buzzing after a visit from celebrated author and illustrator Alex Milway on Monday, March 2, which kicked off a weeklong celebration of reading.

Alex worked with children from years 1 to 6, sharing his journey in creating the Hotel Flamingo and Big Sky Mountain series, leading a live draw-a-long, and hosting a whole-school Q&A. 

Pupils had the chance to ask questions about his work and have their books signed, with some copies now added to the school library.

The week also features a range of creative reading activities, including shared reading across year groups, online workshops with authors and illustrators, and competitions. Pupils will design bookmarks for the Brilliant Bookmark competition and take part in the Ted Wragg Extreme Reading challenge. Reading ambassadors will judge the school’s World Book Day costume competition.

Pupils from schools across Exeter marked World Book Day with a wide range of activities designed to inspire a love of reading and writing.

West Exe welcomed bestselling young adult (YA) author Madeline Dyer, a Lambda Literary Award finalist, for a day of creativity and inspiration. Pupils took part in writing workshops, an assembly, and a book signing. Madeline’s stories, exploring themes such as identity and loneliness, gave pupils a unique insight into storytelling and the creative process.

At Whipton Barton Federation, pupils and staff dressed up as their favourite book characters, creating a colourful and lively atmosphere. Book treasure hunts and interactive reading activities brought stories to life for everyone.

St Luke’s CofE School hosted a World Book Day quiz, a book swap, and took part in the National Book Token Design Competition and Young Writers Poetry Competition, giving students opportunities to engage creatively with literature in multiple ways.

Pupils from Marine Academy Primary marked World Book Day this week with a series of fun and engaging activities designed to inspire a love of reading across the whole school community.

Children arrived dressed as their favourite book characters, including a host of Alices from Alice in Wonderland, and even the school pets joined in the fun, adding to the lively atmosphere.

Families enjoyed reading together in a cosy corner of the Breakfast Bistro, sharing stories and sparking conversations about books. Pupils also took part in book swaps and delved into different themed classrooms across the day to immerse themselves in a range of texts.

Pupils at Cranbrook Education Campus stepped back into the 19th century as classrooms were transformed for a special “Dress Like a Victorian” day.

The immersive event supported years 5 and 6 pupils’ history learning on the Industrial Revolution, exploring the features of Victorian society and how living and working conditions changed during this period of rapid industrial growth.

Assistant headteacher Hannah Wickens launched the day fully in character, introducing strict Victorian-style classroom rules including standing when an adult enters the room, speaking only when invited, and writing with the right hand. Pupils were addressed by their surnames throughout the day, adding to the authentic feel and plenty of good-natured laughter.

Staff praised the effort put into costumes, with outfits helping to bring learning to life and spark discussion about social class, factory work, schooling and daily life in Victorian Britain.

Sixth form criminology students from Marine Academy Plymouth travelled to London to visit the UK Parliament, gaining first-hand insight into how laws are debated and passed.

The students explored the historic Palace of Westminster and learned about the role of MPs and peers in shaping legislation. The trip linked directly to their criminology studies, giving students a deeper understanding of how the justice system connects to the democratic process.

Marine Academy Plymouth, which is part of the Ted Wragg Trust, offers a broad and ambitious sixth form curriculum, with subjects ranging from drama and art to sociology, further maths, finance, and the sciences.

Building on years 7–11, the curriculum develops students’ knowledge and cultural understanding while preparing them for university, apprenticeships, and future careers. Alongside academic study, students take part in enrichment programmes, mentoring, daily tutorials, the Duke of Edinburgh award, and extended project work to develop leadership, resilience, and ambition.

Students at Marine Academy Plymouth welcomed representatives from Babcock as part of the school’s ongoing Future Fridays programme.

The visit from the global defence company gave students insight into a wide range of roles, first-hand experiences of the industry, and a clearer understanding of the skills and qualifications valued by employers.

Future Fridays play an important role in this work, connecting students with employers and professionals and preparing them for life beyond the classroom. The sessions are designed to broaden horizons and encourage young people to think ambitiously about what comes next.

Five pupils at Cranbrook Education Campus’s Eco-Club represented the school at the Met Office’s Climate Camp.

The day included a tour of the innovative building, meeting staff in climate-focused roles such as climatologists, and taking part in hands-on workshops that explored practical ways to tackle climate change and promote sustainability.

The visit inspired pupils to think about ways to make their school more environmentally sustainable, building on projects already underway at Cranbrook Education Campus (CEC). Before Christmas, pupils planted over 90 new trees across the campus, and they have been getting involved with the nearby Elbury Farm woodland project, working with the National Trust to plant trees and help shape the developing woodland.

As part of the Ted Wragg Trust, CEC encourages pupils to care for their environment and understand the impact of their actions. Through these initiatives, pupils gain hands-on experience of sustainability and conservation, putting the school’s environmental values into action both on campus and beyond.

Students at Isca Academy enjoyed a memorable visit from Canadian singer-songwriter Capri, who performed live and spoke openly about mental health, online safety, and the pressures young people face on social media.

The 21-year-old Billboard and iTunes-charting artist, currently based in Los Angeles, performed across three sessions, sharing her experiences with students across a range of year groups. Students responded with huge enthusiasm, enjoying the opportunity to receive free T-shirts, pose for photos, and have autographs signed.

Capri shared her personal experiences with mental health and body image, helping students understand that these challenges are faced by many young people and that support is always available. The sessions encouraged open conversations around wellbeing, respectful relationships, and safe, healthy use of social media.

Capri’s career has already seen her achieve millions of streams across platforms including Spotify, TikTok, and YouTube. She also holds a Guinness World Record for singing 76 national anthems in their host countries, in their native languages, in one year to raise money for orphaned and abandoned children, an achievement she completed at the age of 11. Her recent release Arcade reached number 17 on the Billboard charts.

The visit from Capri formed part of the school’s wider work supporting student wellbeing and digital awareness. As part of the Ted Wragg Trust, Isca Academy places a strong emphasis on helping students navigate the pressures of school and online life, with a dedicated pastoral and safeguarding team available to offer guidance and support. Specialist mental health staff regularly meet with students, while trained staff across the school ensure that every student has someone they can turn to.

The 2026 award ceremony took place this month in Westminster and was attended by Members of Parliament and representatives from schools across the UK.

Part of the Ted Wragg Trust, Marine Academy Primary’s international work has included an enrichment trip to Spain exploring the environment, celebrating Día de los Muertos, and taking part in a lively Spanish dancing workshop. Pupils at the school enjoy discovering and engaging with other cultures. The school’s International Cuisine event brought families together to share foods from around the world, strengthening the community’s global identity.

With strong progress in primary languages and participation in a Reading University longitudinal research study on this topic, pupils are gaining practical skills and cultural knowledge that will support them as they continue their education and engage with the wider world.

Students at Tor Bridge High welcomed local MP Fred Thomas to meet those taking part in the school’s ‘Your Future Story’ programme.

The MP for Plymouth Moor View met with year 7 students involved in the long-term initiative supporting high-achieving students from the South West to reach their potential. The programme provides guidance and opportunities from Year 7 through to the first year of university, including tailored support for students and their families.

Mr Thomas also joined a Q&A session with the school parliament and school ambassadors, covering topics from foreign policy to local issues such as roadworks. Students also shared their views on possible restrictions on social media access for under-16s, a topic currently under consideration by the UK government.

The visit gave students the chance to discuss their aspirations, explore pathways to higher education, and gain insight into public service and the role of local representatives.

It was a joy to see students asking such thoughtful questions about their education and the world around them."

Children from Exwick Heights Primary School had a memorable day at RSPCA Little Valley Animal Shelter in Exeter, getting hands-on experience while working towards their Torbay & Devon Civic Award.

As part of their active citizenship in the local community, the year 6 pupils suggested visiting a charity and were warmly welcomed to the shelter, where they learned about caring for animals in need, asked questions, shared ideas, and even made dog toys for the animals.

Highlights of the visit included helping to socialise very young kittens and meeting some playful ferrets, bringing plenty of smiles to pupils and staff alike. Pupils are now eager to share their new knowledge about caring for pets with the rest of the school and their families at home.

The visit also offered a glimpse into the work of RSPCA Little Valley, a local charity which has been caring for, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals in Devon for over 30 years, relying almost entirely on community support to continue their vital work.

Part of Ted Wragg Trust, Exwick Heights’ mission is to ensure academic excellence and personal empowerment for all pupils through their values of kindness, curiosity and determination, qualities which were all on show during this visit.

“It was a real joy to see our pupils so engaged throughout the day. They loved socialising the kittens and met the funniest ferrets with the loveliest personalities. It was a great way for them to learn about caring for animals and have fun while putting our values of kindness, curiosity and determination into practice.”
