Julie Fossey appointed as headteacher of West Exe School

West Exe School, part of The Ted Wragg Trust, is pleased to announce that Julie Fossey has been appointed as the new headteacher from January 2022.

Julie joined the West Exe team in September 2015 and has been Head of School since January 2021.

She was appointed following a rigorous selection process which included an interview with the Board of Governors and Moira Marder, chief executive of the Ted Wragg Trust. It was followed by question time with the staff at West Exe to which students also had the opportunity to contribute. Julie’s appointment has come at an exciting point in the West Exe journey.

Julie says “With the support and guidance of Tim Rutherford, I have thrived on the opportunity to lead West Exe. I am so proud of what we have achieved here, of the difference that having a good school makes to our students and the community we serve. Now, as we prepare to move from good to great, I intend to build on that difference so that the school can be a centre of excellence.

“I am still very passionate about literature and whole school reading as a way of opening up opportunities and life changing learning experiences for students. I plan to make West Exe a centre for excellent teaching, a cultural hub and a school that is proudly academic whilst also being rooted in community and social justice. Community, opportunity, success still represents who we are as a school. It underpins all that we do. For me, the next part of our journey must be rooted in building sustainable excellence: in teaching and learning, in our curriculum and in the breadth and depth of enriching experiences we offer our pupils.”

Tim Rutherford, current Headteacher at West Exe and Deputy CEO of the Ted Wragg Trust comments, “I have no doubt that under Julie’s leadership, West Exe will become ever more effective and continue to improve the life chances for children who attend the school.”

David Kernick, Chair of Governors at West Exe School, adds, “The Board of Governors of West Exe School is very pleased that we have been able to appoint Ms Fossey to the role of Headteacher. As Head of School, she has guided us through a challenging year and we are very confident she can take over and build upon the excellent legacy that Tim Rutherford has established. We look forward to working closely with her as the school moves towards a centre of excellence.”

Moira Marder says: “We are delighted that Julie has been appointed for this role. We see the transition from Tim to Julie as smooth and effective. Tim will continue to work closely with West Exe in his capacity of Deputy CEO. I know that West Exe is in talented hands and that Julie will continue to build on the foundations laid over the last few years in the school’s journey from good to great!”
