The trip gave pupils the opportunity to bring their classroom learning to life as they explored the zoo and took part in a special talk about giant tortoises, impressing staff with their science knowledge and curiosity.

Throughout the day, the children encountered animals from all six animal groups while learning more about habitats, adaptation and conservation.

The school thanked the parent volunteers and staff who helped make the visit possible, including Miss Prentice, who joined the trip and spent time getting to know her new class ahead of the new school year.

Exwick Heights Primary School, part of the Ted Wragg Trust, provides pupils with a broad curriculum enriched by experiences outside the classroom, with regular trips designed to encourage curiosity and a love of learning.

Mrs Gemma Wills, headteacher at Exwick Heights Primary School, said:

“This was a fantastic experience for our Year 1 pupils. Visiting Paignton Zoo gave them the chance to see their learning come to life, and it was wonderful to see their excitement, curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the day. Opportunities like this help children develop a real love of learning, and we are very proud of how they represented the school.”
