Marine Academy Pupils Explore ‘Unwrapped House’ at Sherford
Pupils from Marine Academy Primary in Plymouth got a behind-the-scenes look at how homes are built during a visit to Sherford.
The year 6 group explored a unique “unwrapped house”, where walls and ceilings are left open to reveal the inner workings of a modern home.
Starting on the ground floor, pupils looked closely at pipework and the layers beneath the flooring. They then moved upstairs to see how insulation helps keep homes warm and energy efficient.
At the top of the house, they stepped into fully finished rooms, including a bedroom and bathroom, bringing everything together and showing the final result.
Pupils also had the chance to explore the wider Sherford development, taking in green spaces, forest areas and community features that form part of the new neighbourhood.
As part of the Ted Wragg Trust, the visit reflects Marine Academy Primary’s commitment to giving pupils real-world learning experiences that spark curiosity and bring classroom learning to life.
Georgina Reid, Headteacher at Marine Academy Primary, said:
“The children had a fantastic time and loved seeing how all the different parts of a home come together. Some of the best learning happens outside the classroom, and this was a great example of that.”
Moira Marder, CEO of the Ted Wragg Multi-Academy Trust, said:
“This is a wonderful example of how schools can work with their local community to bring learning to life. Experiences like this help pupils see how what they learn in the classroom connects to the world around them.”
