Matford Brook Students Take Action on School Waste

Secondary students at Matford Brook Academy took part in a hands-on waste audit with Recycle Devon, exploring how the school can reduce its environmental impact.

Working together, students examined what the school throws away and identified how much of it could be reused or recycled. They also considered practical changes that could help reduce waste across the site.

In a session led by Recycle Devon, students analysed real data, asked questions and gained a clearer understanding of the impact everyday choices can have on the environment.

Matford Brook Academy is committed to developing informed and responsible young people who contribute positively to their communities and the wider world. Across the Ted Wragg Trust, schools promote sustainability through Climate Action Plans, helping students understand environmental challenges and empowering them to make a difference locally and beyond.

Emily Simpson-Horne, Headteacher at Matford Brook Academy, said:

“Our students approached the waste audit with real curiosity and maturity. Working with Recycle Devon gave them a clear, practical insight into sustainability and helped them understand the impact their decisions can have on the environment and their school community.”

Moira Marder, CEO of the Ted Wragg Trust, said:

“Experiences like this show how powerful learning can be when it’s hands-on and relevant to young people’s lives. Through opportunities like this, students are not only developing a deeper understanding of environmental challenges, but the habits and awareness needed to make a positive difference.”
