Lipson Big Band Shines at Plymouth Armed Forces Day

Students on stage ready to perform

Young musicians from Lipson Co-operative Academy’s Big Band performed at Plymouth Armed Forces Day, taking to the stage in a special outdoor performance on The Hoe.

The band played to a large audience in a landmark setting, delivering a half-hour set as part of the annual city-wide event, supported by PYMS and Plymouth City Council.

The performance featured vocals from Lipson student Sara H, who was warmly received by the audience.

The Big Band continues to go from strength to strength, with staff highlighting another strong all-round performance from the group during a busy summer term.

The ensemble has a number of upcoming performances, including a final outdoor appearance at Tavi Fringe on Saturday 11 July. The Music Department will also be involved in school productions of Matilda and Come From Away, before the group travels to Belgium later in the summer.

The performance reflects Lipson Co-operative Academy's thriving music programme, which offers students a broad curriculum alongside a specialist Music Academy and a wide range of ensembles, giving young musicians regular opportunities to perform both in school and across the community.

Part of the Ted Wragg Trust, the school is committed to providing high-quality creative opportunities that help young people build confidence, skills and ambition.

Tom Goodman, Headteacher at Lipson Co-operative Academy, said:

“It was a fantastic experience to see our Lipson Big Band performing at Plymouth Armed Forces Day in front of such an appreciative audience. These young musicians always represent the school brilliantly and continue to go from strength to strength. Opportunities like this are so important in helping young musicians develop their confidence, talent and love of performing, and we are incredibly proud of everything they achieved.”
