Exeter Students Take to the Courts for New Padel Elective

Students at St James School in Exeter are trying their hand at one of the UK’s fastest-growing sports through a new partnership with City Padel Exeter.
The school has introduced padel to its elective programme, which gives students the chance to try activities beyond the classroom and develop new skills.
Year 8 students were among the first to take to the courts, learning the basics of the racket sport while building confidence and teamwork.
The sessions are part of St James School’s wider curriculum offer, which aims to broaden students’ experiences and support their social, emotional and physical wellbeing.
The school, part of the Ted Wragg Trust, offers 49 different electives, run by its own staff and external providers. Activities are designed to help students discover new interests, develop their character and find pursuits they may want to continue beyond school.
The programme also connects students with organisations in the local community, with activities taking place both on and off site.
City Padel Exeter, based in Clyst St Mary just outside the city, has six indoor courts and offers junior coaching for children and young people.
Steve Brown, who leads the electives programme at St James School, said:
“Our electives programme is all about giving students opportunities they might not otherwise have, helping them build confidence and discover new interests. We’re delighted to be working with City Padel Exeter to introduce our students to a new sport, develop their teamwork and, most importantly, have fun along the way.”
Moira Marder, CEO of the Ted Wragg Trust, said:
“We want every student to have opportunities to discover new interests and find activities they can enjoy for life. Partnerships with local organisations like City Padel Exeter help us broaden those opportunities and connect our schools with the communities they serve.”
